UPDATE TO THE PARISH OF ST. STEPHEN:

UPDATE FOR MAY 20:

Dear Friends in Christ,

Bishop Walkowiak has officially announced that on Friday, May 29th parishes may resume the public celebration of Mass and liturgies in the Diocese of Grand Rapids. We will be sending out a communication to all St. Stephen parishioners with more details about both new procedures for Mass and how to sign up to attend Mass.

These guidelines from the Diocese of Grand Rapids for returning to public Mass are a short version of the guidelines that all parishes will be using. Please take a look at them to help all of us understand what to expect as we return to the public celebration of Mass.

Finally, I wish to share with you my great joy at this announcement. It has been a long two and a half months without the public celebration of Mass. For a time our celebration of Mass will be strange and a bit awkward. I believe that the joy of celebrating Mass together far outweighs the strangeness of wearing face masks, keeping social distance during Mass, and the other things we are going to be doing to help keep people safe. I look forward to seeing you at Mass again soon.

- Fr. Scott

Response to May 8 Update

A Letter from Our Pastor

Dear Friends in Christ,

On May 8th Bishop Walkowiak extended his directive which cancelled public Masses through May 28th. I anticipate that you have already seen his letter. It detailed some things to look for when we do return to the public celebration of Mass, which I hope will be the end of this month. Parishes have been sent detailed guidelines that we are working hard to implement to ensure as smooth a return to Mass as possible. As these guidelines are not final and subject to change, we are not sharing them publicly. But you will encounter them when we do return to public Mass.

In these last couple months of the stay at home orders and public Masses being cancelled... Read More (109 KB, PDF)

UPDATE FOR MAY 8:

Mindful of the current circumstances and to continue our efforts to protect the common good, the Diocese of Grand Rapids has extended its suspension of ALL public Masses and other liturgical and devotional services through May 28, 2020. The dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass remains in place through June 30.

While we are not in the clear yet, we want to begin to consider what reopening our churches for public Masses may look like. The date on which public worship is restored will depend upon developments in public health guidance and our confidence that resuming public Masses will not pose an undue risk. Reopening will proceed carefully and in phases.

UPDATE FOR APRIL 24:

From the Diocese of Grand Rapids:

Dear Friends in Christ,

I know how extremely difficult this last month without receiving the Eucharist has been. I thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate these uncharted waters. While I wish we could completely reopen and resume our normal lives our Catholic duty is to protect the common good by not spreading a potentially deadly disease.

Following consultation with doctors in West Michigan, the Diocese of Grand Rapids has extended its cancellation of ALL public Masses and all other liturgical and devotional services through May 17, 2020. This order is in harmony with Governor Whitmer’s updated stay-at-home order.
